The mad man theory is about the idea that by acting in a highly volatile way one can frighten opponents into conceding. It has been used by Nixon, Khrushchev , Zia Ur Rehman and many more in the past. However history reveals such behaviour has rarely succeeded. In the same vein, many have attributed the mad man approach to Trump, who has been using the tariff card and other seemingly outrageous moves freely to coerce his opponents or advance newly defined US interests. While many might feel that his personality is transactional and lacks commitment, an analysis indicated that there is method in Trump’s (seeming ) madness. His actions are reframing the global order , US domestic order and at the root are all aimed at advancing US interests and clipping China’s wings. Even more surprising is that he has been successful so far! Interesting times ahead.
