The recent news that the Government is weighing options to allow FDI from China has strategic implications when seen in the light of the unresolved issues on the LAC and a defence budget allocation which is less than the normal. India must seek a balance and convergence between its economic and military strategy which must ideally stem from an overarching security strategy. This is something which we lack. Also the government must realise that it is a fallacy to assume that enhancing economic interdependence with China will guarantee peace. The opposite has been true. The government needs to be pragmatic and sensible before it gives any economic concession to China.
