Sir, within less than 60 days of coming to power, President Muizzu’s party, the People’s National Congress ( PNC) lost the Mayoral election of Male to earlier President Mohd Solih’s party, the MDP. Proves that Maldivians are not 100% backing the policies of the PNC.
This pro- India section of the population is that must form the focus of our efforts to counter China.
The Maldivian polls are only the latest reminder of how voters in the smaller democracies that are our neighbours- Nepal, Bhutan, BD, SL are suspicious of our intentions. We keep harping on our longstanding civilisational, political, economic ties etc as well as acts of goodwill- SL financial crises, Maldives water crises of 2014 or the deadly 2004 tsunami- yet we have failed to counter China’s growing influence in our neighbourhood. Distrust of our intentions lies at the root of all such animosities. How to build, rebuild and sustain trust is the dilemma we have to solve. We cannot help it if we are the biggest country with the largest economy etc. Even decades after NAFTA, Canada & Mexico still have issues with the USA.
